Engineering & Building Design

Engineering Statement

I am a licensed PE with a magna cum laude in mechanical engineering. I also do structural and MEP engineering.

Building Design Personal Statement

I have been developing my thought on beauty and Building Design since childhood, during my Princeton and Ivy League days from the 1980s on, and particularly since my studies at Building Beauty. I capitalize "Building Design" because I'm referring to the design any human creation has, whether translations, poetry, or buildings, and to the rules that apply to all of them, particularly those involving tropes and topoi (commonplaces or motifs), since language is at the core of all human creation, along with geometry and number.

I started out in architecture and was displeased with the extreme arbitrariness, lack of method, intellectual shallowness and ugliness that was being produced and praised. Fleeing this, I became an engineer to have a more solid knowledge of objective, practical matters related to the field and not be vulnerable to such caprice. My strongest suit is language though, and serendipitously, I wound up in translations for 20 years. Building design is the translation of client desires into Vitruvian Venustas, Firmitas and Commoditas. The field has abdicated its duty to Beauty and my aim is to create it in a reasonably predictable, sober, defensible, and professional way.

Christopher Alexander calls the main quality that built space should have "life," or geometric coherence using certain geometries associated with life and divine Creation, extensible to Gesamtkunstwerk and opera. I am applying literary theory to the use of the method in Christopher Alexander's A Pattern Language and Nature of Order.

Building Design Artistic Statement

My intended audience is makers of not just built space, but anything at all, who are interested in how aspects of language such as tropes and topoi and literary theory can be used to create form. I situate this in the context of the ideas and processes of Christopher Alexander. It is a much-needed sober exploration of how human creation shares aspects of built space. My emphasis on the creation of beauty is very much related to the appreciation of Puerto Rico's building heritage and its continuity as a living tradition, not material for history courses alone.
